Black or White - the colour of money!!

One of our donors recently donated a Kenwood music system to my NGO Adarshmay and while the tape and CD player were not working, but the amplifier was working fine. So we wanted to hook up the audio output of my laptop to the input of the audio system.

To do this I went to buy the required cable from Saraswati Electronics, which is reputed to have all kinds of cables, sockets, adaptors etc.

Saraswati electronics is situated near Chembur Rly Station. The printed MRP on the cable packet was Rs 120/- The guy at Saraswati Electronics told me the price was Rs 60/- I paid him as it is normal for product to be available at below MRP after all it is the Maximum Retail Price.

Things got interesting when I asked him for a receipt! He scribbled 1 audio cable on a pad and tore it off and gave me the "receipt". I saw that the words "Estimate/Quotation" were written on the top of the 'receipt' so I asked him for a "cash-memo"

At first he tried to pass off the estimate as a receipt, when that failed. He told me that if I wanted a 'pukka bill' I would have to pay 12.5% tax and not on the amount that he charged me, but on the printed MRP! i.e. Rs 15 in taxes! I tried to explain to him that I am willing to pay the tax on Rs 60, but to no avail!!

So finally I left with the kutcha bill angry and sad....

The Rs 60/- I paid will now be unaccounted and untaxed i.e. black money!

In a small way I have been forced to contribute to the growing menace of tax evasion! If this is the way a reputed store behaves, one wonders what the smaller guys must be doing....

:(

Have you had any experiences with kutcha/pukka billing?? Please do comment...

"Easy" Money Transfer with remit2india - II

[June 29, 2007] I had decided I would not call remit2india and just see if they would call me (wasn't really expecting them to!) and well they didn't, so then in the evening I called them and enquired about my remittance. After being on hold for a while, I was asked to call after ten minutes till they checked the account.

And....

After about fifteen minutes, I received an email from Paypal saying that my payment has been refunded! Whew! Finally! :)

Well, that ends my interaction with remit2india.

Will I patronise them again? Not in the near future, atleast. Perhaps next year, if I am really desperate to get the funds... but this experience has surely left a very bitter taste in my mouth to say the least.

"Easy" Money Transfer with remit2india - Prologue

The story so far:

Remit2India : Leader in Online Money Transfers, Wire Transfers & Money Remittances to India.

[June 20, 2007] That is what the web site says about this money transfer service from the Times of India group. So I booked a remittance for $200 to be credited to my account in India. It was supposed to be a Fast Track transfer, which promised money to me overnight! Well I booked the remittance and then paid the money via Paypal expecting to see the money in my bank account the next day!

[June 21, 2007] Surprise! No money in my account! So I checked my email account and sure enough there was a mail saying that the remittance request was closed as

[quote]The status of your remittance made on June 21, 2007 through Fast Track has been changed to closed as we have not received funds for the same. No payment will be made to any beneficiary in lieu of this particular transaction.[unquote]

Well I wrote back to them, saying that I had paid money the same day and also sent them the email receipt from Paypal that I had received.

[June 22, 2007] I received a reply from remit2india saying:

[quote]With regards to your remittance reference number 1487914001, we would like to inform you that we have raised an investigation on your transaction being closed. We would able to provide you the revert with in the next 24-48 working hours.[unquote]

[June 23, 2007], [June 24, 2007], [June 25, 2007], [June 26, 2007], [June 27, 2007] No revert, only I keep making calls to their customer service number but the system has been down for THREE days!!

And the reply I got was: "the concerned department will revert back to us and then we will update you."

[June 28, 2007] I finally get fed up and ask for any superiors that might be able to help! Surprise! Surprise!! Apparently there is no supervisor on the floor till 12:00 noon and none after 4:00 pm! Isn't their setup amazing??

So an overnight transfer has now progressed into a eight day soap opera...let's see how this progresses... I will post day to day update on this.

If you have any similar experiences with this or any other company or any comments please feel free to comment on this post or email me at ashish@pawaskar.com
